I used to live in LA, Redondo Beach to be specific, for a year in 2012. I wrote about my daily life on NissyGoesCalifornia and did some online counseling for the EF language school. I also spend a little over a month roadtripping the west coast, parts of Arizona and Utah in 2015, which was such a great experience.
One thing, next to all the other things I love about LA, is that the food choices are amazing. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes I can’t recommend highly enough and it would be unfair to not share them with you. So here we go
Dining at Geoffrey’s is such an experience. The view over the ocean is stunning and the food is exceptional! I never know what to pick because everything on the menu sounds delicious! Tip: make reservations!
Another amazing place in Malibu! The interior is Pinterest worthy and so is the food and the drinks! Tip: get the f’rosé (frozen rosé).
Huckleberry Cafe & Bakery
Do you like cake? Oh what a silly question, everyone LOVES cake! Huckleberry is the place to go then! They also serve great breakfast! Tip: weekdays are not as busy as the Weekends.
There is also one in LA but I like the one in Santa Monica. It’s small and cozy and their granola is super good.
The perfect place to grab some cocktails with your girls. The food is good and the atmosphere very chilled.
Blue Plate Taco
I mean “tacos”…what else do you really need to know? This Mexican place is great to visit with your family. The staff is friendly and fast and the tacos are delish.
Le Pain Quotidien
One of the first places I went to and still a favorite. They are spread all over the world, so check out if there is a close one to your place. They serve organic food in a great atmosphere. Tip: try the turmeric latte
Cha Cha Chicken
Well, the name gives it away: it’s all about chicken, but there are vegetarian options as well, so no worries. Also, the sauces are a thing there!
Catch American Seafood
I recommend not showing up in beachwear to this place, but don’t get intimidated. Catch is located in the Hotel Casa Del Mar at the beachfront and serves local seafood and grilled veggies from the farmers markets.
For all you coffee enthusiasts, this one’s for you. Drink coffee with no shame here because it’s organic, ethically sourced and you can even take this wonderful bean home! Tip: they also got amazing tea and juices for all the “no-coffee-drinkers” like I am (is there anyone out there besides me? Raise your hand please – I feel kinda lonely with this).
Here comes one of the best vegetarian & vegan option on this list. Their menu is amazing and so is the food. I personally love their kale salad, the cauliflower and the matcha.
Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea
One of the best coffee places (citing my friends here) in Venice and around LA. They educate you on coffee, if you’re up to and even have barista classes and other Events.
Located on Abbot Kinney Blvd, one of the most famous streets in Venice Beach Gjelina is not a hidden gem anymore. They’re food is uh-mazing and people know! Definitely put that on your list, when visiting Venice! Tip: If I’m not mistaken, they are going to close the place for renovation in Spring/Summer’18, so pay them a visit in the next month or go check out the brand new location for me in Fall!
On the same street, you can find Lemonade, yet another stylish and delicious place. The poke bowl is one of the best items on the menu; however, it is hard to choose, really.
The Butcher’s Daughter
You can already tell that Abbot Kinney Blvd is the best location when it comes to Food. Some of you might remember The Butcher’s Daughter from my New York City Food Guide and it’s no surprise that it’s on this list too. They have lots of vegan options and their smoothies are so good! Tip: the peanut butter banana smoothie is my fav!
A healthy menu and a great place to grab a bite. They also have various vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options, so everyone will find something to their desire.
Pleasing those coffee lovers out there with another great coffee place. There is almost never a free seat at Coffee Commissary in West Hollywood, but grab your coffee to go and you won’t regret it.
Bricks & Scones
Got a sweet tooth? They might be a bit pricey, but totally worth it. I love their scones, waffles and actually everything else as well.
Carmela Ice Cream
Probably one of the best ice cream I have ever had was at Carmela’s. The flavors are sensational! You can find them at the farmer’s market, book them for events or simply visit them in LA (close to The Grove)
Salt and Straw
Can you tell I’m a sucker for ice cream? Salt and Straw does also amazing flavors and if you haven’t had enough sweets already then head their place!
Mateo’s Ice Cream & Fruit Bars
I like big cups and I can not lie.. big cups of ice cream, duh! Mateo’s serve ice cream in a stunning array of flavors. The place is super colorful and has a feel good atmosphere. However, parking is though, so take a friend who can grab some while you wait in the car.
If the names doesn’t make you curious then I don’t know what you are doing here 😉 All dishes come with eggs in some sort of way. Tips: the eggs benedict are the bomb.
Zinc Café & Market
I think boyfriends have starved here because their girls took too long taking a #foodie. JK, but the food really is picturesque and so good. They host events, so if you have a birthday coming up check it out! Or maybe you are invited to one at Zinc already, then consider yourself lucky.
The Springs, originally from New York, is a cool place with a clean design mixed with wood and greens. They are located in the Art’s District that is worth a visit anyway. Combine a stroll through the vibrant and inspiring part of LA and reward yourself with a stop at The Springs.
American Tea Room
You know by now that coffee isn’t so much my thing, but tea definitely is! This is my kinda place: lush greens on the walls, loose tea and a great patio to sit on. If you love tea as much as I do, then you will love this place.
Last but not least: No Los Angeles food guide would be complete without mentioning:
The hype got real! Screw McDonald’s and Burger King; In-N-Out is the best fast food place! No road trip can be taken without stopping at an In-N-Out at some Point.
